In 1972 some aspiring vignerons independently recognised the potential of the Mornington Peninsula for producing high quality, cool climate varieties similar to those of the great wine producing regions of France. These pioneers were quickly joined by others and the region now has 200 vineyards, 60 brands and around 50 Cellar Doors.
Viticultural and winemaking experience and a highly developed professionalism have allowed vignerons to use their terroir to produce premium quality wines which now fit very comfortably in the world wine market.
Surrounded by Bass Strait, Port Philip Bay and Western Port Bay, the Mornington Peninsula is one of Australia's few true maritime wine regions. Situated at the latitude of around 38, it is also classified as a cool climate region. This unique combination allows particular wine styles to flourish without many of the problems associated with a cool climate.
The maritime influence provides relatively high summer humidity and rainfall. The coincidence of late ripening and a prolonged gentle autumn result in fully ripe grapes with outstanding fruit flavours, high natural acidity and fine tannins.
Mornington Peninsula celebrates Australian Pinot Noir. The principal varieties and the most successful styles are pinot noir and chardonnay which flourish in the peninsula's conditions. Though introduced to the region more recently, pinot gris has built a strong reputation for quality and regional distinction.
Almost 50% of plantings are Pinot Noir, around 25% Chardonnay, 11% Pinot Gris/Grigio, with a diverse range of other varieties suited to specific sites including Shiraz, Riesling, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and even some Cabernet Sauvignon.
Mornington Peninsula International Pinot Noir Celebration is held biennially in February - the next will be held in 2009 - Pinot Noir from around the world is tasted by national and international wine media alongside producers from the US, France, New Zealand and Australia, during two days of serious fun! Peninsula Piers & Pinots is held during the Labor Day weekend in March annually - a small group of vignerons showcase their pinots in an intimate setting by the beach at Flinders Yacht Club.
Winter Wine Weekend is held during the Queens Birthday long Weekend in June annually - around 50 wineries exhibit under one roof to launch the event which flows all the long weekend at Cellar Doors.
Red Hill Long Lunch is held annually in conjunction with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival - 250 guests are treated to a lunch to remember prepared by several leading regional chefs with food matched to distinctive local wines Pinot Week is held annually also in conjunction with the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, with activities showcasing Mornington Peninsula wines featured at different Melbourne based venues.
