The 11th International Cool Climate Wine Show was this year held in May, a departure from its previous 10 years in the hotter month of February, and a move which better suited both the wines and their makers.
The location also changed, away from the rustic Red Hill Showgrounds hall in the heart of the Mornington Peninsula, to the excellent modern venue of the Mornington Racecourse. The ambience might not be so rustic, especially at the awards night dinner, but it's a sign that this show is growing up. With far better facilities to store, judge and handle the wines, overall this is a good move.
This year there were a record 680 entrants from both Australia and New Zealand. A total of 298 medals were awarded, just under 50%, which might seem generous if it were not for the sheer quality of many of the wines on show. Many who missed out were very good wines - perhaps they did not show as well in the new, cooler month of May (pinot noir in particular can perform better when not too cold), or perhaps the judges were being especially tough, for they only handed out 27 gold medals and 57 silvers, with the balance being 214 bronzes.
