The sub-region of Mount Barker sits at the heart of the Great Southern region and was famously selected as one of the first truly desirable regions implicitly suited for viticulture by John Glastone in his acclaimed work, Viticulture and Environment.
Specifically Gladstone specified “the best vineyard growing environments of the Great Southern lie to the South of Mount Barker and Muirs Highway, which corresponds roughly with the 750mm rainfall isohyet” which is precisely where Terry Hogan planted up the Xabregas estate in 1996.
The jewel in the crown of Mount Barker are our three beautiful vineyards, situated 10km South of Mount Barker along the much acclaimed Figtree Lane, Spencer and Narrikup Roads. The vineyards exist in very specific sites that cover a 10 kilometer radius and were expertly planted to follow a strong line of alluvial iron based gravels that concentrate on the hill sides of each vineyard, wonderfully reminiscent of the Rhone Valley's terraced slopes.
The three single vineyards behave as idiosyncratically as the Hogan brothers, despite their ommon lineage. The Figtree Lane vineyard expresses an incredible intensity of fruit flavour and depth, whilst the Spencer Road illustrates the more mineral and slate like acid structures of truly cool climate regions, and finally the Narrikup Road vineyard offering an interesting abundance of complex savoury flavours adding to the dynamic of this wonderful regional diversity.
Our vineyards have been impeccably maintained by vineyard manager, Ross Pike, who has begun to adopt the benefits of sustainable agricultural practises that also change the flavours and structure, as the vines become mature and more resilient to pest and disease.
