Fifteen minutes out of Daylesford in central Victoria, and nestled in the foothills of Mount Franklin, Mt Franklin Estate family vineyard thrives on rich volcanic soil to produce an array of vigorous Italian wines.

The broad landscape was settled by Swiss Italian and French who came as goldseekers and stayed to create smallholdings that grew vineyards that produced their own wine.

Each year the vines yield a bounty of plump luscious grapes used to create select wine varieities such as dolcetto, nebbiolo and pinot grigio.

Dolcetto: this variety, predominantly grown in northern Italy, produces a finely flavoured dry red wine. Maturation in oak barrels for 12 months results in a well balanced red wine with soft tannins and a lingering berry flavour.

Nebbiolo: the sought-after barolo of Piedmont in northern Italy where the name derives from nebbia (fog) often seen in the vineyards during harvest. The dark grape ripens late; the wine has high acidity and substantial tannin fleshed out by blackberry, raspberry, and cherry fruits.

Pinot grigio: styled in the Italian fashion, this white wine has vibrant fruit characteristics such as tropical fruits. Finished with a crisp refreshing acidity, it can be served chilled or at room temperature.
