The Wilson family began Medhurst Wines as the perfect way to combine their passions and expertise – Robyn's childhood in the Yarra Valley and intimate knowledge of the area and Ross' years in the wine industry and love of wine.
Medhurst Wines are made exclusively using fruit from their vineyard in Victoria's Yarra Valley.
The Medhurst vineyard comprises 38 acres (15ha) of low cropped chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir and shiraz vines. Yields average only 2 tonnes per acre (5 tonnes per hectare).
The vineyard is located near the junction of Maddens Lane and Medhurst Road, Gruyere a unique part of the cool climate Yarra Valley. Vines are planted to optimise the viticultural features of this exceptional site. Shiraz and cabernet sauvignon are planted on north facing slopes to ripen the berries perfectly with the maximum amount of flavour and sugar. The chardonnay and pinot noir vines are planted on sites to enhance flavours and aromatics prior to maximum sugar accumulation.
Neighbour Dominique Portet makes the wines for Medhurst. He discusses the potential for each parcel with Ross before the wines are made. Just like the care and attention the fruit receives, so too the wines. Most wines are aged in a selection of new and old French oak. Above all quality is paramount – there is no compromise.
