Mount Hurtle winery is home to Geoff Merrill wines, in Woodcroft, not far from Adelaide.
Mostyn Owen purchased 200 acres of prime Reynella hillside and built a winery in 1897, Mount Hurtle, named after the city of Adelaide's first mayor. The winery, innovative for its time, used the principal of gravity feed throughout the cellars.
When Geoff Merrill purchased the Mount Hurtle winery in 1985 it was run down and dilapidated. It required two years of love, hard work and a special vision by Geoff and his supporters to restore the winery and vineyard to its former glory.
While retaining an almost Tuscan charm, the original winery and recently added barrel maturation cellar now perfectly copes with the rigors of modern day winemaking.
Famous for the large family of Geese, Ducks and Swans that inhabit the dam at the entrance to the winery, Mount Hurtle exudes old world charm and is today a heritage listed building – and an important piece of Australia's wine making history.
The wines of Geoff Merrill have had continued success at Australian and International Wine Shows winning the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy and The Visy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge with our Reserve Shiraz in recent years
