The flu threat seems to be increasing again and the world is feeling a bit panicky at the speed at which new viruses can spread. But we still need to take a break, whether it's a day off, a weekend or your annual leave. So where to go? Probably not to Central America right now, but there are lots of other choices - starting in Australia.

International travel might get a bit harder in the weeks ahead, as travellers are screened for runny noses as well as pointy metal objects in our shoes. All in the essential interests of public health and safety of course - but a tiresome addition to the airport ritual. So what to do? Holiday at home (or for those of you from overseas, come to Australia for a month and relax).

Australia has 69 wine regions, from Margaret River in the west to the Granite Belt in Queensland. Australian restaurants and food rank amongst the best in the world - and they won't cost you the earth. Between Port Douglas, Darwin and Hobart you can sample dishes by internationally acclaimed chefs, of styles that would match it with the best of west coast USA.

We also have some of the world's best wines - right here, and at a fraction of the price of French and American counterparts. How many can say they've tried the wines of all Australian wine regions - let alone visited more than a fraction of them?

So before you pack your bags for France, consider what's on offer right here. There's never been a better time to pick up either wine or travel bargains in Australia - cheap airfares, discount accommodation and some fabulous wine offers. And if you're a wine travel enthusiast, add a VisitVineyards.com Membership card for you and your partner and you've got the only passport you'll need this month.

It's free to subscribe to our website and pick up lots of tips, itineraries and recommendations, or take your travels to an exciting new level with our year-round Membership benefits program - huge value at only A$99 for an entire year (A$169 for couples; both prices for Australian and NZ residents, and A$79 single and A$129 double for international visitors). You can get your money back in just one weekend.

Jancis Robinson

Although chardonnay would seem to be the more obvious candidate, Jancis Robinson believes that Riesling with its own very distinctive character is the greatest white wine grape in the world »
