The Merricks General Store at Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria is a peninsula icon. Its origins date back to the rural 1920's era with its two front gable bays, shady veranda all built in simple vernacular materials.
The Store's prime location on the Hastings-Flinders Road nestled about half way between Balnarring and Shoreham has been a destination for over two generations of visitors to the Peninsula, and the local community. In 2004 the store was refurbished and extended to create a Cellar Door & Café.
The Cellar Door has, on tasting and sale, the entire range of Elgee Park, Baillieu Vineyard and Quealy Wines.
Country hospitality is served from breakfast to late afternoon lunches and a wholesome delicious list of vignerons dishes and platters.
The Myer, Baillieu and Quealy families, through their vineyard interests, have helped create the Mornington Peninsula wine region.
Elgee Park pioneered viticulture on the Mornington Peninsula, establishing their vineyard in 1972. They also pioneered Viognier in Australia (1979), their Family Reserve now an Australian benchmark. Elgee Park is tucked away in Merricks North; the vineyard covers the north-facing slope of a natural amphitheatre, with a view across Port Phillip Bay to the Melbourne skyline, as depicted on their wine labels.
Baillieu Vineyard is a modern vineyard established in 1999 with active conservation values. The site faces due north, protected from the west with natural bushland. The catchment of both Bulldog and Tubbarubba creeks begins on the Baillieu Vineyard property.
Quealy Wines is Kathleen Quealy's new wine identity. She and her husband established the, now famous, T'Gallant business in Main Ridge. Kathleen and her husband were instrumental in introducing Pinot Grigio to Australia. Whilst continuing the best of the Merricks General Store traditions, Kathleen will be developing the Cellar Door business, and a contemporary direction in the produce and food area.
Merricks General Store will continue to be the meeting place for food and wine lovers. The Cellar Door and Café are open every day from 9- 5 serving breakfast, lunch and refreshments to suit the locals and wine tourers.
