Established in 2002 to assist in the understanding and appreciation of fine pinot noir, Pinot South brings together the winemakers from Diamond Valley, Paringa Estate, Nepenthe, Scotchmans Hill and Stefano Lubiana.
Having accumulated more than 120 collective vintages of pinot-making experience, these experts have conducted a series of informative and highly educational tasting seminars around Australia over the past few years.
The 2007 tastings focussed on the hot topic (no pun intended…) of climate change. As we tasted wines specially made for the event, we explored the interaction of viticultural practices with our changing climate through techniques such as frost-proofing vineyards, clonal selection, trellis design, management of harvest date and irrigation.
What did we find? In most cases the tasting groups agreed that climate change is influencing our sites and the styles of wine we are making. However, we could not agree whether these changes are occurring at the rate which some experts are predicting.
